Victron home energy storage – which batteries to choose?
Home energy storage - which batteries to choose?
Victron home energy storage – building a home energy storage has its economic justification. In the case of a photovoltaic installation, it may happen that the scale of the energy obtained is greater than the real needs of the owner of the installation. In such a situation, it is worth betting on a warehouse that will accumulate excess energy and then put it into use when it is needed. The use of a good quality battery in the form of a warehouse is an optimal solution in terms of economics and the environment. Which battery to choose? What is the difference between acid batteries and lithium-ion batteries - Victron home energy storage?
Victron home energy storage – you can choose from acid batteries and lithium-ion. Before making a purchase decision, it is worth considering how they differ. One of the key parameters is battery life. Here, lithium-ion solutions beat acid solutions. All because a good quality lithium-ion battery can have a lifespan of up to 5000-8000 cycles. Traditional kvass is ten times less number of cycles. Another disadvantage of lead-acid batteries is that they are damaged when they are discharged to zero. This problem is extremely rare with lithium batteries. Li-ion batteries can be operated in the full capacity range, which does not affect their service life. Traditional lead-acid batteries allow the use of approx. 50% capacity. Higher energy consumption leads to their damage.
The last key parameter is the efficiency of the device. It determines how much energy we are able to take from the battery compared to the one we deliver to it earlier. Here, too, lithium-ion solutions have a clear advantage with an efficiency of 95%, compared to 80% of their competitors. In terms of use, more efficient solutions also take up less space and are lighter, which also speaks for their purchase. It's not usually important when you plan to create home energy storage.
Which solution is safer – Victron home energy storage?
In terms of safety, both lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries meet the highest standards. If they are used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and with extreme care, nothing dangerous should happen. The main difference in the construction of both solutions is that the lithium-ion ones have built-in BMS (battery management system) security systems. Thanks to them, the parameters of the battery are under greater control. Monitoring of temperature, currents, degree of charge and discharge allows for increased safety of use.
Which battery to choose for Victron home energy storage?
A much better choice for home energy storage will be a lithium-ion LiFePO4 battery. This is supported by its technical parameters, including, above all, durability, efficiency and effectiveness. In addition, it is definitely less reliable, and its use optimizes the use of accumulated energy from the photovoltaic installation. The specificity of a home energy storage is that it is charged and unloaded in a daily cycle. The use of a lithium-ion model allows to achieve up to ten times longer service life of this solution.
This does not mean, however, that lead-acid batteries are evil and completely useless. Of course it is not. These models are ideal for UPS systems.
